ABSTRACT
This project examined transmogrification, an experience in Uromi, Today’s Edo State Nigeria. The study discussed the geographical location, history and early settlers, political structure, traditional rulers and kingdom. The transmogrification experience of three notable persons in Uromi was discussed. These persons include: Oghae of Ukoni, Agba N’Ojie of Uromi and HRH Okojie Okolo N’Ogbidi. Oghae of Ukoni was a great warrior who fought for his people during the prehistoric era of the Ukoni people and land expansion in the whole of the region. He was often reported to reappear and help fight for his people whenever there is s distress. Agba N’Ojie is another god of war and deity worshipped under a tall kapok tree every Uromi first market day by the Esan people. It is believed that Agba N’Ojie has the power to protect them during the war and hard times. Agba N’Ojie of Uromi’s exact date of death was never confirmed as he was reportedly disappeared in abush know today as Aihuojie, by his soldiers who persuaded him to call off the war or die. Today in Uromi, the Bush remains a clear field where elders from various clients held their meetings in regards to development, growth and administration of the Uromi people. Furthermore, Ogbidi Nojie (1857 -1944) was a renowed prince, warrior and prominent deity from the Okhoide village which the Uromi people venerate till today. He was known for his significant role of resisting the colonial administrative taxation of his people. During his lifetime, he was known to have built schools to support higher learning and built the roads from Uromi to Ilushi, Agbor and Ehor. Furthermore, during his reign he and his subjects later adopted the British Christian religion after resisting for a long time. He is known for his aspiration for renewed independence for black Africa and Nigeria.
