ABSTRACT

This study examined the change and continuity of Agricultural production in Nigeria using snail farming in Ndokwa East Delta State, Nigeria as a case study. The specific objectives are to: examine snail farming practices in Ndokwa East Delta State, identify the constraints and prospects of snail farming (heliciculture) in Ndokwa East, Delta State. The historical analysis method was used to glean out facts from articles, textbooks, newspapers, relevant websites and electronic journals linked and other significant internet sources. The work reviewed that snail meat being rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron is recommended for a hypertensive and pregnant women. It is important source of protein to human diet, additional source of income to farmers. There are some constraints that militate against good performance of snails in Ndokwa East of Delta State. This includes: genetic constituent, hormonal influence, environmental factors, rearing pattern and inefficient use of resources available to the farmer. Some of the barriers of snail farming among peasant farmers include: hatching the snail eggs and formulation of the best feed for snails at whatever stage of growth. Snail farming comes with a lot of benefits. Some of these are as follows: Snail farming is one business that can reduce poverty by creating employment for many; snail farming requires less capital investment, while much profit is generated in a considerable short time. It also act as a source of employment for individual, groups and society thereby reducing the problem of unemployment in the society.
