ABSTRACT

The study investigated the perceptions of undergraduate students to teaching as a profession in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. The study sought to determine the perceptions of Ambrose Alli University undergraduate students to teaching as a profession, examine whether the perceptions of Ambrose Alli University undergraduate students to teaching as a profession differ by gender, age and their level of study. The descriptive research design using the survey was adopted in this study to investigate perception of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma undergraduate students to teaching as a profession. The population of this covered all the 22130 regular undergraduate students in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in the 2017/2018 session excluding students in the Faculty of Education. A sample size of 441 students was drawn for the study. The proportional random sampling technique was used to select 2% of the total number of students across each of the faculties in the institution. The instrument used for the collection of data was basically a researcher developed questionnaire titled “Perception to Teaching Profession Scale Questionnaire (PTPSQ)”. The test-retest method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. Research question was analysed using mean () and standard deviation (S.D) while the t-test statistics for two independent samples was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance.  Findings revealed that students had clear positive perception on teaching as a profession among Ambrose Alli University undergraduate students. Sex and level of study had influence on students’ perception on teaching profession. It was recommended that for teaching to really be a professionalized, it must not only become a full time job for all professional teachers, the conditions of service must be attractive and opportunities must be provided for the professional growth of the teachers.
