ABSTRACT

The study examined knowledge, risk factors and health promotion strategies for managing non-communicable diseases as perceived by clinical health practitioners in Ekpoma, Edo State. Specifically, the study examine the knowledge of non-communicable diseases as perceived by clinical health practitioners; determine the risk factors in non-communicable diseases; the health promotion strategies for managing non-communicable diseases as perceived by clinical health practitioners in Ekpoma, Edo State. Three (3) research questions were raised to collect data from Clinical Health workers in Ekpoma, Edo State. The descriptive research design using the survey was adopted in this study. The population of this study covered all 162 clinical health workers in the private hospitals in Ekpoma, Edo State. A total of 81 clinical health workers were drawn as sample. The research instrument used for the collection of data was a questionnaire. The test-retest method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The questionnaires were personally administered to clinical health workers in selected private hospitals with the help of one research assistant who was also an undergraduate student in the Department of Physical and Health Education (Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma). The mean () and standard deviation (S.D) was used to analyse data. The result showed that respondent has good knowledge of non-communicable diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic respiratory and cancer as perceived by clinical health practitioners in Ekpoma, Edo State. It was recommended that trainee counsellors, teacher-counsellors and school guidance counsellors should deploy orientation and information services in clinics to ensure health practitioners are well informed about the causes of non-communicable diseases
