Description

 ABSTRACT

The study examined the influence of teacher qualities on students’ academic achievement in mathematics in secondary schools in Edo State. Specifically, the study was undertaken to determine the influence of teachers’ qualities (teachers’ educational qualification, years of teaching experience, age, sex, marital status) on students’ achievement in Mathematics.

This study adopted the ex-post facto research design. A sample size of one hundred and twenty five (125) teachers and one thousand two hundred and fifty (1250) Senior Secondary School students in class two (SSII) was used for the study. Two questionnaires were used for the collection of data in the study. Teacher factor Questionnaire (TEFAQ) and Student Academic achievement in Mathematics (SAAM) were used in collection of data Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in this study. For descriptive statistics, means ( )and standard deviations (S.D) were used to analyse research questions 1 to 6 while inferential statistics namely: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, Sidak mean comparison test and t-test for two independent sample means were used to test the hypotheses of the study. Hypotheses were tested with the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Sidak Post-hoc mean comparison test and the t-test for two independent sample means. The entire hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance.

The result showed that teachers’ educational qualification, their years of teaching experience and age are characteristics or personal attributes of a teacher that promote students’ academic achievement in Mathematics in secondary schools in Edo State. Sex and marital status have no influence on students’ academic achievement in Mathematics in secondary schools in Edo State. It was recommended that Mathematics teachers should take cognisance of sex differences in students’ performance in Mathematics and therefore, endeavour to encourage female students with the necessary morals they need to compete favourably with the males in Mathematics.
