ABSTRACT
The study examined the impact of limestone in Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study sought to examine the socioeconomic characteristics of people living within Okpella, Edo State, highlights the problems encountered by the people as a result of limestone industry; examine the contributions of limestone industry to socio-economic development of the people living within Okpella, Edo State. The cluster random sampling technique was adopted. Staff/people living close to the cement factories (below 10kilometres) and households situated far from the cement factories in Okpella (over10km away). The questionnaire was used. Frequency count, percentages (%), tables and Chi-square (X2) statistics analysis were used in the study. Result from the analysis showed that depletion of forest resources is one of the problems of limestone quarrying in the area. The cement companies in the study had provided gainful employment opportunities for people in the area. Hence, result revealed that limestone mining has contributed to the development of the locality community. It was recommended that there is the need for the government to intensify effort in the implementation of environmental impact assessment of cement industries and limestone quarrying industries now and in the future considering the nature of its impact.
