Forms, Predictors And Risk Factors In Domestic Violence Among Women In Akoko-Edo Local Government Area Of Edo State

ABSTRACT

The study examined the prevalence of domestic violence among women in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. Specifically the study south to determine the number of persons that experience domestic violence, forms of domestic violence, reasons for domestic violence and risk factors associated with violence among women in in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study adopted the descriptive study design. The population of the covered all the one thousand two hundred (1200) women in the selected towns (Igarra, Oke, Atte and Ibilo) in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of one hundred and twenty (120) women, which is 10% from the entire population, was drawn as the sample sized for the study. The simple sampling technique was used as the sampling technique. The instrument used for the collection of data is a questionnaire developed by the researcher. The test-retest reliability method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The copies of the questionnaire were administered by visiting the selected towns in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. Research question 1, 2, 3 and was analysed using mean percentages with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) (IBM Version 20). The result showed that the prevalence of domestic violence among women in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State is high. It is further concluded being beaten with hand, being forced to perform sexual act, to be controlled over resources and deprived of financial support are the forms of domestic violence that are experienced. It was recommended that domestic violence is rampant in selected town in Akoko-Edo Local Government and the state in general. There is therefore need for educating people about family responsibility, as way of eradicating domestic violence among families with students.
