Abstract

The study examined the factors responsible for high incidence of human trafficking among youths in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to examine: what makes Uromi attractive to traffickers and the trafficked in Uromi, Edo State; the people’s reaction to trafficking in girls and women in Uromi; the effects of trafficking in girls and women in Uromi community and the locality at large and suggest ways that would help to reduce trafficking in girls and women in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of this study consisted of all the trafficked young girls and women in Uromi. Uromi is a conurbation of villages divided into three groups namely: Okhiode, Obiruan and Obiyon. A sample of 12 victims of human trafficking in Uromi Area of Edo State, representing approximately 5% of the population was covered in the study. The cluster random sampling was used to divide Uromi into three major areas. The areas comprises of three clusters namely: Okhiode, Obiruan and Obiyon. Data were sourced from primary and secondary sources. Primary data was sourced from interview schedule while secondary data were collected from newspapers, textbooks, electronic journals, and the online publications obtained via the internet. The research instrument used for the study was interview schedule. The findings, among others revealed that there is a significant relationship between economic difficulties, socio-cultural influences, poor legal regulations, political instability and high incidence of human trafficking among young girls and women in Uromi. It was recommended that Nigeria government should create enabling environments for entrepreneurship for the citizens, especially the young ones to learn a skill in other to earn a living.
