ABSTRACT
The study examined the factors influencing self-medication among pregnant women attending Ujoelen health centre Ekpoma Edo State. Specifically, the study sought to: examine clinical, health related and cultural beliefs factors contribution to self-medication among pregnant women attending antenatal in Ujoelen health centre, Ekpoma Edo State. The study employed the descriptive research design. The geographical location for the study is Esan West Local Government Area in Edo State. The target population for the study consists of all the 120 women pregnant women and duly registered for antenatal in Ujoelen health centre, Ekpoma, Edo State within the period of survey. A sample of 112 pregnant women were included as sample of the study using the rule of thumb. Purposive sampling technique was employed in the study as the entire 112 respondents were covered. The instrument that was used for the collection of data was a self- developed questionnaire Data collected were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. The result showed that the clinical factors influencing self-medication among pregnant women were recurrent discomfort 66 (60.55%), non-awareness of the health benefits of seeking clinical directives 76 (69.72%). The result further showed that healthcare related factors influence on self-medication as stated by the majority, distance of health facility 59 (54.12%), cost of health services 72 (66.05%), among others. In conclusion, the findings show that factors influencing self-medication were clinical factors and health care related factors. The researcher therefore recommended that there should be health enlightenment campaign with emphasis on the consequences of self-medication in pregnancy.
