Description
ABSTRACT
The study accessed the effect of soil erosion on cassava production in Ohafor local Government Area of Abia State. The specific objectives of the study are to: identify the types of erosion in the area; examine the effects of soil erosion on the cassava production in the study area; investigate the socio-economic impact of soil erosion on people in the study area and examine the soil erosion control strategies for effective cassava cultivation in the study area. Data used in the study were obtained from primary and secondary sources. A total number of 105 respondents were sampled to obtain data. For the purpose of the study questionnaire were used to collect data from the respondents. A total number of 105 questionnaires were randomly administered to obtain data from the respondents in the study area. The data collected for this study were analyzed with the use of tables, charts, graphs, maps and simple percentages. The Chi-square 2) statistical technique was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that poor internal drainage is the cause of gully erosion in the study area and this resulted in reduction in agricultural yield. Making drainages is one of the ways of reducing soil erosion in the study area. The extent of soil erosion in the study area is very high as it affects cassava food chain in the area. It was recommended that the government should establish a special joint task force that will be charge with the function of creating drainages. In line with the construction process of these drainages, this construction project should be awarded to adequate and efficient construction agencies or companies e.g. staff Construction Company, Julius Berger etc. so as to ensure and provide durable standard, and long lasting project, in order to meet the purpose of the project
