ABSTRACT

The study evaluates the effect of mass media campaigns on drug abuse among youths in Lagos State. The specific objectives of the study are to determine the existence of mass media campaigns on drug abuse; media of campaigns on drug abuse and the effectiveness of mass media campaigns among youths in Lagos State. The study adopted the descriptive study design. The population of the study covers all the 199,615 youths in Apapa, Lagos State. Generally, the projected population of the local government area is about 307100 persons (City population, 2019).  A sample of 200 youths from Apapa, Lagos State was drawn in the study.     Data was sourced from primary and secondary sources. Research question 1, 2 and 3 were analysed using percentages (%), mean ( ) and standard deviation (S.D). A mean score of 2.50 was used as the criterion mean for determining youths’ perceptions on the items. The research questions were analysed with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) (IBM Version 20). The result showed that students know about mass media campaign on drug abuse in their area. The result further shows that Newspapers captions, Television programmes, social media campaigns on social media handles like Facebook and Instagram and Billboard campaigns are the media of campaigns on drug abuse and are effective among youths in Lagos State. It was recommended that parents should train up their children in the fear of the Lord and they should re-orientate them on the adverse of drug abuse on their health society and human dignity because charity begins at home as they say
