ABSTRACT

The study analysed the economic analysis of okra production among small scale farmers in Esan North East Local Government area of Edo State Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to: examine is the socio economic characteristics of small scale okra farmers in the study area, examine the average okra production output of okra farmers in the study area and also investigate the constraints of okra production in the study area. The study area is Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area, Edo State. The information required from the respondents was gathered via the use of questionnaire and interview schedule. The questionnaire was used for the literate farmers, while interview schedule was used for those that were not literate. The data used for this study were collected by the researcher, by the use of questionnaire and interview schedule. The data for this study were analysed using descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis and four point likert scale. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the economic analysis of okra production among small scale farmers in Esan North East Local Government area of Edo State Nigeria. The constraints were obtained using likert scale of four points budgetary analysis was used to obtain the cost and return analysis. The result showed that the total variable cost used for the production with form 74.19% of the proportion total cost use for the production, level of profit was high considering the fact that the Okra farmers still engaged in other crop production which generate income for them in the study area. Furthermore the major Okra production constraint recorded in Esan North East Local Government Area is lack of improved okra seed to improve the productivity of its production in the study area. It is hereby recommended that Government should address the problem of lack of improved Okra seed, poor or no extension agent and inadequate use or lack of fertilizer for potential farmers. This is because the study reviewed that poor sales at harvest period and difficulty in assessing land in the study area.
