Description
ABSTRACT
This study comparatively analysed the academic performance of students from public and private secondary schools in Nigeria. Specifically, the study sought to determine whether the performance of public and private secondary school students differ in three (3) prevocational subjects namely: Basic Technology, Business Studies and Home Economics. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population of this study covers all the 3,241 junior secondary school (JSS) students in the 16 public secondary schools and 4,658 junior secondary school (JSS) students in the 38 private secondary schools in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Hence, a total population of 7899 junior secondary school (JSS) students was covered in the study. A total of 150 junior secondary school students were drawn for the study. Data on students’ scores in the prevocational subjects were collected from their respective schools. Hence, the study made use of students’ raw scores in Junior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (JSSCE) results. The t-test statistic was used to test the research hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result from the analyses shows that there is a significant difference between public and private secondary school students on their academic performance in Basic Technology, Business Studies in Home Economics. Hence it was recommended that a functional and well equipped Home Economics laboratory should be provided in all private and public schools. This will help to stimulate the interest of students and teachers towards the learning and teaching of the subject in the schools.
