Description
 ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to anthropometrically compare the cephalic index between Esan and Etsako indigenes of Edo State. This is restricted to youth within age bracket of 18years to 45years. Specifically the sought to examine whether head types of Esan and Etsako indigenes of Edo State differs according to their gender; determine whether there is a difference between the head length of Esan and Etsako indigenes of Edo State; find out whether there is a difference between the head breadth of Esan and Etsako indigenes of Edo State and further investigate whether there is a difference between the cephalic index of Esan and Etsako indigenes of Edo State. The study adopts the cross sectional design. The study covers the head types, head length and head breadth of Esan and Etsako indigenes. The study was conducted on 400 subjects (male =200 and female =200) out of whom 200 was drawn from Esan while 200 was drawn from Etsako. The subjects considered for this study all belonged to either Esan or Etsako ethnic group within the ages of 18-45years. A set of questionnaire comprising the demographic profile, ancestral background and other necessary information were verified before considering volunteers for inclusion. Measurements on the subjects were taken by locating appropriate anatomical landmarks. All the measurements were taken thrice and mean will be calculated to ensure accuracy of the measurements. The data for the study were analysed using descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, means and standard deviations were used to analyze data collected while the independent sample t-test for comparison of means for any two groups was used as the inferential statistics in the study. Statistical significance was considered at p<0.05. The result showed that male and females indigenes of Esan and Etsako, Edo State have different head types (Ultrabrachycephalic, Hyperbrachycephallic, Brachycephallic, Mesocephallic and Dolichocephallic). Similarly they have different head length and breadth but similar cephalic index.
