Description
Abstract
This study was designed with a focus on the analysis of gender role and family labour utilization in rice production in Agbede, Etsako west local Government Area of Edo state, Nigeria. A survey method was adopted through the use of well-structured questionnaires and complemented with interview schedule. Data collected from respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study highlighted the predominant role played by the male gender in rice production in the study area. This lead role was conspicuously shown in land preparation {83.3%}; de – stumping {93.3%}; tilling, ploughing of soil {83.3%}; setting of traps for rodents {73.3%}. The female gender dominated in other activities such as dropping of rice seeds into holes {66.7%}; winnowing of rice {83.3%}; sun drying {90%} and marketing of milled rice { 96.7 %}. The use of family labour ranked first {53.3%} among sources of farm labour .However, the use of local and crude farm implements may not encourage large scale rice production in the study area. It is therefore recommended that the use of modern farm machines, equipment and tools be introduced into rice production as a way of cutting down on family full time engagement in rice farming in Agbede. Farm mechanization draws in commercial production of rice to meet both local and international demand.
